Deathtouch Commanders

Hello everyone, today I’ll be discussing a topic that I recently got into. I’ll be discussing good commanders, but not just overall commanders. Today, I’ll be discussing good Deathtouch commanders. These are not in order of best to worst, they are just all good deathtouch commanders I am interested in reviewing.

Deathtouch

For a refresher and for anyone who is new to the game; deathtouch is an ability that creatures can have.

Deathtouch: Any amount of damage this deals to a creature is enough to destroy it.

For example, if a 2/2 deathtouch creature is attacking and a 4/4 blocks that 4/4 and the 2/2 are dead.

There are ways to get around deathtouch, one other ability called First strike where the other creature hits first, but that’s not what this blog is about so let’s get into these commanders!

Queen Marchesa

amino-28acf28b

Mana cost: 1 white, 1 red, 1 black, 1 colorless/any color

Abilities: Deathtouch, Haste

At the beginning of your upkeep, if the opponent is the monarch, put a 1/1 assassin creature with deathtouch and haste on the battlefield.

P/T:5/5

Opinion

Queen Marchesa has Deathtouch and haste, quite the nasty combo. When she enters the battlefield, you become the monarch (becoming the monarch means that you get to draw on your end step.)

On top of those abilities, she also makes 1/1 assassin tokens that have deathtouch and haste. However, she will only make these token when the opponent is the monarch.

Marchesa is good for making tokens. As for cost, Queen Marchesa only costs four mana, has all these abilities that she can do and is a 3/3.

Four mana for all of that isn’t bad and since she isn’t costly that makes her a good commander to cast for early and late game.

Rhonas the indomitable

amino-5e33b42e

Mana Cost: Two any color, one green

Abilities: Indestructible, Deathtouch

Rhonas can’t block or attack unless you have another creature with the power of four or greater

Two any color and a forest: Another target creature gets +2, +0 and gains trample until the end of the turn.

P/T: 5/5

Opinion

Indestructible and deathtouch are another fine combination of abilities. This commander can also give trample and buff creatures for a turn. Giving creatures trample is a good ability and having a commander who can also help out other creatures is great.

This card only costs 3 mana in total and has all these abilities that are honestly sometimes a little overpowered. The card is easy to get out early game and the only thing that could stop it from attacking or blocking is not having a creature with a power of 4 or greater.

In my opinion, that’s the only downside, if you run a low mana cost deck for deathtouch this commander may not be the greatest only because it not able to attack unless you have a creature with four or higher. That being said if you can get those creatures out easily then this commander would make a good deathtouch commander.

Sidisi, Undead Vizier

amino-82212e6c

Mana Cost: Two black, three non-color/colorless

Abilities: Deathtouch, exploit (when this creature enters the battlefield you may sacrifice a creature.)

When Sidisi, Undead Vizier exploits a creature, you may search your library for a card put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

P/T:4/6

Opinion

Five mana for a 4/6 isn’t the best, but also isn’t bad especially when you add the effects of what this creature does into play.

Sidisi would be a great commander for any sacrifice deck because of its exploit ability, in addition to being good in a sacrifice deck, it would also be a good choice of commander in a deathtouch deck because most deathtouch decks are black.

If it were the commander of the deck, it may be a little costly and may come out more towards mid game, but it still has a useful search engine, that you can utilize to search out a card and do this every time it comes back onto the field from the command zone.

Atraxa, Praetors’ Voice

amino-44c29ada

Mana cost: 1 white, 1 blue, 1 green, and 1 black

Abilities: Flying, Vigilance, deathtouch, lifelink

At the beginning of your end step proliferate.

P/T:4/4

Opinion

Atraxa is a great commander in general but would be good for deathtouch. One reason is because of those being that it is a creature that costs four mana, with four abilities and four power and toughness.

Those reasons right there are reasons why it is such a good commander. If you can get the mana needed, then she can be out early game and can be summoned back pretty easily if she ever left the battlefield.

If we look at her proliferate ability this would be good in any type of +1/+1 or -1/-1 counter deck. You could do so many nasty things with the proliferate ability. Atraxa `also has lifelink so you’d gain a whole bunch of life using her.

Isareth, the Awakener

amino-d977edb9

Mana cost: Two black, One any color

Abilities: Deathtouch

P/T:3/3

Whenever Isareth, the Awakener attacks, you may pay X. When you do return target creature card converted mana cost X from your graveyard to the battlefield with a corpse counter on it. If that creature would leave the battlefield, exile instead of putting it anywhere else.

Opinion

Let’s start with the good mana cost a 3/3 with deathtouch and extra ability for three mana, definitely not that bad of a commander.

The ability isn’t that bad, yes in the end you do have to exile a creature and pay more mana, but this ability is optional and it’s not bad if you need an extra blocker or attacker of some sort.

The card is good even not as a commander and just in the deck as a creature. This is definitely not a bad choice for a commander with deathtouch, there may be some that are better, but she’d be good if you can build a good deck around her.
